Current Geothermal Use

The United States generates an average of 15 billion kilowatt hours of geothermal power per year, comparable to burning some 25 million barrels of oil or 6 million short tons of coal per year. There are commercial scale geothermal projects currently working or in development throughout California, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii, Idaho, Utah, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska. According to a 2005 ENEL report, geothermal supplies 8900 MW to 24 countries worldwide, and geothermal use has been rapidly rising in countries such as Russia, Kenya, the Philippines, Indonesia and Iceland. The United States produces more geothermal electricity than any other country in the world, generating roughly 32 percent of the world total.
